Year 5

Welcome to our Year 5 Class page. Here, you will find all the information you need to know about what we will be doing in Year 5 this term.
We are thrilled to welcome the children back to school ready for a fantastic new school year. This term we will be focusing on making sure children feel safe, happy and re-connected to our school community.
Year 5 marks both the beginning of UKS2 and the beginning of their journey to becoming secondary school ready! This means that, Year 5 will bring new challenges, high expectation and work on becoming independent learners who steer their own educational journey. Because of this, in Year 5, we encourage children to:
- arrive on time, ready for their learning
- follow the academy rules
- live and breathe the Academy values (resilience, respect, aspiration, integrity)
- be independent in academy routines and in their learning
- have excellent attendance
- be hard-working and always try their best
- be kind, thoughtful human beings

Reading
"To learn to read, is to light a fire" - Victor Hugo
Reading is an essential skill that all children need to have to progress to their full potential. Daily reading broadens children's vocabulary, widens their imagination and drastically improves their writing ability.
Each week your child will continue to take home one banded reader book that is specifically chosen for your child's reading level and one book from the library.
Banded books will be changed fortnightly by one of your child's teachers or teaching assistants - children will be told a certain day to bring their banded books in to be changed. If children finish their books before their book change day, they just need to speak to one of their teachers and this will be changed early for them.
Reading in partnership is an enjoyable, powerful and enriching experience. We ask that parents read with their children five times a week. 10 minutes of adult/child reading per day is proven to significantly enhance children’s reading skills and therefore enhance their life chances in accessing academic success.
All reading should be recorded in their journal with your child recording at least twice a week using the grid in the front of the journal to support their ideas and an adult at home should record in the journal every time you read at home.
In school, you child will also read with an adult once a fortnight, as well as having a daily Reading lesson, where they will learn the skills behind reading.
When we visit the library, this is an opportunity for your child to explore a wide range of texts before choosing one to check out for the week. Library books need to be returned before a new one can be issued.
Home learning
At KVPA Academy, we are committed to fostering a love of learning both in school and at home. Our Home Learning Policy encourages children to take responsibility for their learning and develop key skills.
As part of this, we expect all children to complete:
- Reading at home at least five times a week to build fluency and comprehension skills.
- Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars. These are available for engaging and interactive maths practice, which supports the key concepts taught in class.
- Home Learning Grids. These grids offer a variety of creative and topic-based tasks, refreshed each term to keep learning fresh and engaging.
Children are encouraged to complete at least one piece of work from the grid as a minimum. Completed work can be brought into school, where they will have the opportunity to showcase their efforts and achievements with their class, celebrating their creativity and hard work. Thank you for your support in making home learning a valuable extension of classroom learning!

Knowledge Organisers
Our knowledge organisers are placed in the children's books as they begin a new topic, the children know to use them to find key tier 2 & 3 vocabulary, and other important information to help their learning throughout the unit.
