Year 1
Welcome to Year 1 at Kingsbrook View Primary Academy!
Year 1 is an exciting and important year for your child, as they transition out of the Early Years Foundation Stage and into the National Curriculum. At Kingsbrook View, we are proud to offer each child a positive transitional phase, by adopting a dual curriculum that supports both curriculums through continuous provision, small group work and adult-led activities. This approach is adopted until at least February time, offering substantial opportunities for age-appropriate discovery and exploration, as well as small group work and individual scaffolding, before moving onto whole-class table work as they begin to build on readiness skills for Year 2. We believe that it is this discovery approach that ensures that children engage in a wide and rich curriculum, whilst also still having an opportunity to develop key skills of self-awareness, independence and resilience.
Every child in the class is supported by the teacher and teaching assistant, who strongly believe in our school vision of Growing Together to Achieve Dreams. We acknowledge the importance of positive relationships and strive to build these with every child in the classroom, as well as fostering a strong home/school partnership. We are looking forward to beginning this journey with you, to ensure that your child is strives to meet their full potential.

Phonics and Reading
Phonics is an integral part of our daily timetable in Year 1, with a 30 minute taught session each morning. Our new Academy Phonics scheme is Essential Letters and Sounds, which encourages children to embed their learning through decoding, segmenting and blending and then applying this to skills of reading and encoding (writing sounds to form words). Every Thursday, your child will have two new reading books that are linked directly to the sounds that we are learning that week. Each book should be read at least four times before the following Thursday when their books are changed again. Your child will not have a banded reading book individual to them until they have passed the Phonics Screening Check at the end of Year 1.
